Recently we come across more used, old and non-working gas lanterns from our finds. As great as it is leaving the non-working ones “as-is” for decoration, we decided to be a little creative with this one and turn it into an actual working electric lamp/lantern for the home.
After some brainstorming, it was obvious the lantern needed to be taken apart in some areas. The primary focus was how to install the electrical in a clean and simple way. Maintaining the aesthetics. Once that was figured out, it was as if a bright light bulb turned on over our heads (no punt intended).
The now, electric lantern can hang from its handle or rest on a table top. The wiring is made so it can easily adjust when hung. The best part, it now plugs right into the wall! Although, an energy efficient bulb was used, to change the light bulb you would simply pull the glass portion out by turning the lantern lever. This pops the glass out and gains you access to the light socket. Basically the same process if you were changing the wick on a working gas lantern.
This was a fun project, and we’ll plan on doing more like this as we come across more rad looking lanterns.
